I'm not sure of the models, but the first one was an 8-port Linksys hub, and the current one is a 5-port Netgear switch.

I went there today, and looked at it myself. Turns out the new one wasn't fried (I still suspect the first one was, though). I'm not sure why, but some cards were getting 192.168.0.x addresses, and some where getting 169.254.x.x addresses (Windows autoconfig addresses) seemingly at random. The Win98 machines would consistantly get 192.168.0.x addresses via dhcp, but the WinXP machines would go back and forth between those and the 169.254 addresses whenever the machine was restarted or the network interface was released/renewed.

Since there are only 4 machines, I ended up just setting the addresses in by hand and leaving it at that.
