Jon,

When the grub spashscreen comes up:

type 'e' ; enters the edit mode ; if you look at the bottom of the screen, it tells you how to get
                                ; to the edit mode, but it may be going by to fast to read if you
                                ; have a short 'timeout' set ;
down arrow to the line with the kernel on it
type 'e' again to edit the line
add ' 1' to the end of the line ; that's 'space', '1'
hit enter to complete the edit ; takes you back to the grub splash
type 'b' to continue booting

after you've finished your stuff in single user, 'ctl', 'd' will take you to the default user mode.

So I put a couple little scripts that I wanted to start at boot time in
rc.local luckily these now make the box hang and never gives me a prompt
to login. What is the command to go into single usermode in RH9 so I can
delete these out? I have GRUB as the boot loader and I thought I could get
a prompt before it boots the kernel and enter 'single' but this doesn't
work.
