Actually, it is a win-modem and it is on the motherboard. Bummer. I got a
modem from Wal-Mart. I checked on the SUSE website and I thought it was
compatible. I found out after closer inspection that I transposed the
numbers, so it's not compatible. Fortunately, I did not unwrap it, so I can
take it back and get my money back. I'll then head to CompUSA and find a
modem that will work.

Hey Matthew...

I remember having issues with SuSE in the past with dealing with the
modem. Providing that PC-CHIPS didn't put a win-modem in the system, you
may just have to go through and re-set your serial with the setserial
command. Ensuring that your correct ttyS = comX and that the IRQ's
aren't being shared.

I would hate for you to go through and spend the money only to find out
that it truly worked. However if you truly have to buy a new modem... I
prefer USR (now 3Com) external modems. I know it sounds archaic, but I
can tell a lot from the blinking of the lights... :)

Well, I took the plunge and installed SuSE 8.1. I LOVE it!!
It installed just fine except for one thing. It did not find my modem.
I
didn't think it would as it is built into the motherboard (PC-CHIPS
Motherboard). I don't mind buying another modem, but I would like some
input
from you guys as to what kind I should get. I would like to get a
internal
modem if possible, but I will get an external modem if needed. At least
the
XP still works, so I can ask for help. Thanks.
