Subject: configuring network devices

Hello,
I'm running Redhat 7.2 on a Dell Inspiron 8100. I also have a dsl modem-router combination from ACS. Up until today, I used the ACS router as my gateway, and have had no problems accessing the net - with one exception.
I need to make an ssh connection to a client. I can ping the destination host, but cannot ssh to it (times out, can't see host). Today, in attempting to reconfigure my network access to bypass the router (plugged modem eth cable directly into computer network port), I removed the ethernet devices from the system configuration. At present, I am unable to re-configure those devices (using net config under Gnome).
Can someone get me (re)-started here?
Thanks in advance.
Wil Gerken.
