Oh, I see. In that case, let me point out one little thing I
noticed on re-reading your message. Here's your error:
> >>tar: etc/ptmp: Warning: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
Notice there's no leading slash on etc. That means that if you're
not running the command from /, it won't find the files in /etc.
