While I haven't had access problems in Vmware, CD devices in it have always
been dog-slow. Here's a hint: if you use the same CDs all the time (or just
have a hell of a lot of disk space) use iso images instead:
cat /dev/hdc > mycd.iso
And tell Vmware to use a file instead of a raw device. It's as fast as HD
access at that point. And if you point Vmware to a symlink, you can still
switch CDs whenever you want by deleting the symlink, wait a second, and
relink to a new file, or even the raw device.
