I am helping a charter school to use Linux and the board members
want to know what is the app to use for Wordperfect docs, and they
really want to replace MS Office completely and Wordperfect.

OpenOffice 1.0.1 apparently does not read wordperfect ?
Do you have use a Corel product ?
