Someone has to have put one together somewhere. It just makes too much
sense not to. The basic tools that the Windows Samspade.exe uses are
available on almost any *nix box - dnsquery, host, nslookup, etc. The only
thing missing is the package that puts them all together and performs
different operations depending on what you put in the text box.

There are also some decent programmers/scripters on this list. Given time &
interest, an AKLUG OpenSource CD could include a script that would duplicate
the functionality of samspade. I haven't noticed many posts about X
programming for a GUI interface, but that doesn't mean there are no AKLUGers
that know how to do that. "Made in Alaska" would be pretty cool.

I could kludge together a bash script that do simple things - parse the
input to figure out whether or not it is a fqdn or ip address and run the
appropriate tools, but it would not be pretty (and at the absolute limit of
my scripting skills). Something that uses ncurses or X would be better
IMHO. I have a few other projects that are taking up my time, but if
there's interest & nobody else wants to do it I could start on a simple
script. Might be a while before any results are visible though, so if one
of the list gurus can whip up something in Perl it would be ready much
faster and technically better than anything I can do.

Time to dust off that Advanced Bash Scripting Guide printout...

Cheers,

James
