Thanks for the great explanation, civileme. Just let me interject
one extra command between /sbin/lilo and ctrl-alt-del:
# umount /dev/hda5

It probably wouldn't make a difference for the exact scenario you
described, but it's a good habit to get into. I saw the same advice
a while back (on this list, maybe), but forgot it the next time I
was in that situation.

We may get spoiled with reboot or shutdown commands, but any time
we're using a filesystem that is mounted read-write, it needs to
be unmounted before rebooting. Otherwise, corruption could occur.
