Greetings Mike (B.)! I am building a "surfboard" for a friend. I am
using a hand-me-down box (Cyrix something-less-than-300 I think)
with 48M RAM and a 1.?G hard-disk. I do Debian, so I first put on
enough to get to the Internet (10BT at the Friday night gatherings).
Then, using dselect, I carefully selected just what I thought would
be needed. The monitor question is still somewhat open (I have a
candidate - 15 inch VGA). It needs an AT keyboard and a serial
mouse. I asked the Friday night bunch and an AT keyboard
mysteriously appeared. I rummaged through a bag of mice, and I think
I have a couple of choices.

My goal is 800x600 for X at as many colors as the video card (also
from the Friday bunch) and monitor combination can handle. I like
iceWM, so I installed it. I put on the e-mail client called sylpheed
to separate the e-mail from the browser. I will install galeon,
mozilla, and netscape 4.7? to give my friend a choice.

I will also put a few things for maintenance for my convenience. It
is quite clear this I will be having an extended relationship with
this box. I could only find a 33.6 modem. My friend may want to
purchase a 56K or get dsl later. I used this 33.6 modem right up to
the point just about 10 months ago when I got dsl from acs. It was
quite satisfactory for e-mail and surfing, but I do installs, so it
was really painful at the less than 33.6K connection.

I do want to fireproof it before I release it.

Hmmm... I could go on, but this gives an idea of what I am doing.
Cheerio! fgd
