Larry,
I am afraid you are incorrect. ping with the -a will return a valid DNS A
record as the below output shows......

Ping 198.51.13.3
Pinging 198.51.13.3 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=61
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=61
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=61
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=61
Ping statistics for 198.51.13.3:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip
times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 40ms, Average = 35ms
----------------------------------------------------------
ping -a 198.51.13.3

Pinging pineapple.arctic.net [198.51.13.3] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=61
Reply from 198.51.13.3: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=61

However it will appear they are the same if the IP you ping does NOT have a
dns entry.

On NT 4 and 98se "ping" and "ping -a" return the same result. It appears
they don't complain about the "-a" but it doesn't do anything.
