Typically, it's a good practive to put a /boot partition somewhere near the
beginning of the drive (within the first 1024 blocks, iirc) just to be on
the safe side...I've never tried it myself to make a system without a
separate /boot partition, but I've never had a problem with having one, and
typically the 16 MB or whatever you end up losing is not a big enough loss
to fret over...
