Are the sound modules being loaded? If the /dev/dsp device is in fact
present but you still get the error, then try (as root or use sudo):

modprobe sound
modprobe [whatever module your soundcard uses]

Since you're using RedHat you can try (as root or use sudo) sndconfig,
which should detect your sound card and choose the proper modules.
