No automation, thats part of the point. Doing it by hand
forces you to at least skim most of it, best way to keep a handle on
it. www.ietf.org, www.rfc-editor.org are good places to start. All
the RFCs, RFC-Drafts, BCPs, and FYIs are available there, as well as
the IETF working groups docs and mailing list archives. As well as
keeping an eye out and keeping copies of any IEEE or ITU specs you run
across (802.1Q, 802.11, 802.3, etc...).
Most if it is walking the RFC indexes, checking the current status of
the various one, and figuring out what is current and updates what,
and what is obsolete and if to keep it in for historic reasons.
For example am attaching the raw RFC list for DNS. Later I will double
check it, and add secondaries such as old config files, bits of BIND
reference material, messages from nanog, and notes on current BCP
(best common practice) and which RFCs reference them.
IT helps, for example, I am current with BIND upto 8.x, but I am still
weak on the finer points and requirments of DNSSEC and its support in
BIND 9 (I can set it up, but I cannot do a primo tuned config and
*know* it is done *right*, just well), by the time I finish all the
updates I should have a pretty good handle on it.
