The winmodem might be able to be used, but you don't boot with it, rather
you edit your kernel configs. I've never set one up, but I have read
documentation on it. A google search is all I used I believe.

It worked! Thanks again, aklug to the rescue. Once
again I used the 'test editor' in KDE, it has a handy
search/file open tool that makes it easy to rummage
through the etc files and then has an easy 'save'
feature. The line is 'start on boot=yes' and change it
to 'no'.

My next big project is to find a binary driver for
this built in Lucent winmodem and get it installed so
I can create a dial up connection with this thing in
Linux. I think I can find one but I'm wondering.....is
it possible to download the thing onto a win98 desktop
and then use rawrite to transfer it to a floppy, then
boot linux and install it from the floppy? I have no
way of conecting to the net with linux because I don't
have broadband eth out here. Thanks in advance for any
suggestions......captkrk

In the beginning there was data. The data was without form and
null, and darkness was upon the face of the console; and the Spirit of
IBM was moving over the face of the market. And DEC said, "Let there
be registers"; and there were registers. And DEC saw that they
carried; and DEC separated the data from the instructions. DEC called
the data Stack, and the instructions they called Code. And there was
evening and there was morning, one interrupt.
