I don't believe that's the case any more with most software. On the mail
side, handling that's cake. While I haven't tested it, I would think that
login/etc., should readily accept '.'s as a valid part of the login username.
Some software packages do place length restrictions on the username, but that
would be the only potential stumbling block I could think of off-hand.

And, as someone else pointed out, you could always give them a unique &
friendy login, with the dotted address a mail alias only. . .
