To start with the bad news, start an sftp session to a host, and enter
the 'version' command.

My Debian Jessie returns:

sftp> version
SFTP protocol version 3
sftp>

I tried a Stretch machine and that returns version 3 as well, so
unfortunately that easy path won't get you to version 4 or 5.

Being able to edit extended ACLs would be cool though. It would save
copying the file and then logging in again to set the ACLs after the fact.
