I have a couple 2nd hand chromebooks running xubuntu in a chroot. These are
the fastest computers I have used in a long time, and since I use the cloud
pretty heavy (Google enterprise reseller and user since early gmail beta) I
don't rely on but a handful of fat clients.
My main desktop is a hand me down, a3 year old gamers rig, so it is still
pretty modern with an i7, 16gb ram, solid state drive and dual pci-x video
card. Like I said, a monster. But, I paid $200 for it, gotta love gamers :)
Otherwise, I tend to lean toward the lower energy requirements, like Royce
mentioned, for my personal systems. I have a dell PowerEdge 2850 (and 2800
iirc)that is gathering dust because a desktop will do the same thing for my
use case (hyper-v sandbox) for a fraction of the power.
