I had not considered it from that perspective, and agree with your
assessment. There are a few options for this, some of which involve
getting archives working on the VPS, and (not mutually exclusive)
another of which is requesting marc.info start archiving the list [1] as
they don't seem to be picky. It looks like they'll try to get the
archives in as well.

Regardless of all that, I think I'll see if I can get a list and archive
running within the next week or so (before vacation), as that'll at
least give anyone who wants to try a chance to play with the list
software, and give some feedback.

Even if it doesn't go through all the way at least I'll finally figure
out how to get archives going! :) Also, do we care about web forms to
sign up for a mailing list? Or is straight, "email a special address
with commands to get it done," sufficient?
