This is why, as Arthur pointed out, it is generally a bad idea. In my
specific case, the DSL system keeps me isolated from everybody else and
I know for certain there's nobody out in the neighborhood telco hut
trying to hack me.

If you plug your modem and all the computers in your house into a
switch, any computer can set up PPPoE connections which show up as
"ppp0" virtual interfaces along with eth0, which is still usable on your
LAN. I had reasons for experimenting with this back in the early days
but have no practical use for it anymore.
