11.10 is the first Ubuntu release that doesn't have Gnome as a fall back,
it is Unity only. There is a newer version out, 12.04, which is a "LTS"
version. This stands for "Long Term Support" and is meant to be a stable,
long term version. It is likely a better choice.

Uhh ... I thought Ubuntu was using something called Unity. I don't know. Is
that based on Gnome3?
I still doubt that I would have anything to help much. I use Gnome on
Fedora, and Fedora supplies different tools.
