[aklug] ntp and freebsd?

I was doing some reading on using WWVx and ntpd came across the
following at http://dx.eng.uiowa.edu/dave/ntpclock.php

Lesson no. 1: Use FreeBSD instead of Linux to do this. Nothing against
Linux - I use it on all my research workstations. But with FreeBSD,
all of the ntp stuff (including nanosecond precision) is native in the
generic kernel. No recompiling of the kernel is required! I'll try to
include some hints for those not familiar with FreeBSD as part of this
discussion.

And my immediate thought was something like "ok...and...?"

I've no problem with freebsd except that I'm way more familiar with
linux, and the redhat derivatives (work) and debian (everywhere else),
and debian works very nicely on the various sheevaplug/pogoplug/xxplug
devices.

It looks like what the guy is saying is the only advantage is not
having to compile a kernel, which to me is no big deal, especially
since I've no real interest in the learning curve on Yet Another OS.

Does using freebsd for ntp have any core advantage other than that?
Anyone have any knowledge or thoughts on this? What am I missing
here?

Thanks!
