I worked for years with rebol. Rebol was developed in the 90's by
a (then) well-financed team headed by Carl Sassenrath, who had a
lot of cred by being the lead programmer of the Amiga OS. It is a
very well-designed programming language and it never went
anywhere. I would say that that the weakness of rebol was the lack
of promotion by the developer. (I (sort of) knew/know him).
So rebol never went anywhere and I don't use it any more except
for a few utilities.
On the other hand, there's PHP (ick!) No doubt it is the most used
programming language on the planet and with it being a component
of Facebook. Yet PHP was well-recognized back when facebook was
first developed.
I think it would make a good case study to see how PHP became a
success. I like to compare PHP to Bud Light. Everybody drinks it
'cuz everybody drinks it. Only Bud Light doesn't mix code, data,
and presentation into an ungodly mess and make exploits easy.
Time for a Guinness. Oh, it's morning ...
