I modeled this apple today using Blender for the mesh and Gimp-2.7.3 for
the texturing:

It was all done with a mouse, and about eight different texture layers.
Most of the technique is in picking the right brush shapes, sizes, and
opacities, and having a sense of how to layer the colors on. Drawing
straight lines is more challenging with a mouse, but you can use vectors
for that.
