Far be it from me to defend the Xorg guys, but it must be said: the main
reason why older drivers get dropped is because none of the active
developers have access to the older hardware. It doesn't affect them, so
they don't care. Which leaves only one real solution: one of *us* needs to
step up and offer to port and maintain that driver for the newer code base.
Which will last until we no longer have that hardware ourselves.

:-) That said (as a guy who predominantly uses obsolete hardware), this is a
very compelling reason why you should maintain your own distro. No forced
Gnome 3 migrations, etc., just to keep your OS patched up to date.
