Simple economics. Relatively low volume product that requires top-grade
components and construction that are typically sold to large, high end
companies. The trifecta of $$$.

Given that the vast majority of drives out there are on maintenance
contracts you've got to figure that they're not going to cut corners or
leverage economies of scale, in hopes of never having to replace the units
and be able to bank the maintenance contract as 100% margin.

Plus, the consortium that owns & licenses the technology (Ultrium, which was
started by IBM, HP, & Seagate) probably charges a very pretty penny to all
of their technology and manufacturing partners...
