FYI: I'm a programmer and have used linux steadily for 10 years, but
am not so knowledgeable about hardware, so am soliciting input.

I have had Gateway GT5422E for 3 years. It has an on(mother)board
nvidia graphics chipset with 128 meg of shared memory. I have 3
gig of RAM.

I've used slackware 13.0 and 13.1 on this box and either slack has
run like a charm. However performance with ubuntu and kubuntu has
never been satisfactory to me.

I'm looking at graphics cards at :
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=video+card+pci-express+nvidia+8300&x=0&y=0
and one in particular at
http://www.amazon.com/nVidia-GeForce-9500GT-PCI-Express-ZT-95TEK2M-FSL/dp/B002Q5PXA4/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287776407&sr=1-1-fkmr3
I'd welcome comments.

I have been advised to stick with nvidia by a hardware geek, and
I've googled some info that indicates that ratheons have been
problematic with ubuntu.

TIA
