One of the things I ran into when deciding what to put on that Cobalt
Qube Mike let me have is the Kernel size when using (or trying to use)
the original firmware. It was a large part of why I opted for NetBSD
instead of a regular Linux.

What the people at www.linux-mips.org were recommending was: "strip
vmlinux", followed by "gzip -9 vmlinux".
