In Gentoo, it seems that the virtual-ose ebuild depends on
virtual-ose-additions, which is under Sun's PUEL license, which only
allows personal/education with with restrictions on host/client connections.

I hadn't heard about KVM. I've been having a good experience with Bochs
so far, once I compiled the latest source from the website (2.4.5, April
2010). Bochs is actually a true emulator (non-native), so performance is
worse, but there are some advantages also: no external dependencies
required for compiling; and no host system alterations are required.
Bochs isn't quite as 'click-and-go' as VirtualBox, but the options menus
are pretty easy to figure out so far.
