Another element to take into account is your geographic location. You're in
Alaska which is quite aways from the rest of the US and major pipes. I hear
there are upgrades going in for the pipe to AK.. If there is an outage on
that pipe, there isn't much of an alternative.

I have clients in the states that have used Google Apps for years with only
a few interruptions, not enough to take out a 5 9's SLA which is pretty good
up-time in the I.T. world.

However, I worked with a company in Fairbanks that had a large number of
issues with Google Apps and we always traced it to the connection from
Alaska to the Lower 48, not an issue at Google or with their cloud.

If a company is large enough to have such a large impact with down time, as
you stated, IMHO they should not be using a hosted service but rather invest
the I.T. resources into internally controlled solutions, especially with
corporate auditing and records keeping a hosted solution may be
ill-equipped to handle.
