NIC: RTL 8169 (I think), lspci doesn't mention it that I can tell.
OS: Ubuntu 9.04, I don't remember which kernel I'm on but it's the latest packaged kernel as of 3 weeks ago.

Do you know what card is in it? If not, try lspci at the command line.
Also, what version of linux are you using?
What is the model of the computer?
This will give folks a head start to helping you solve your problem
tonight if you decide to bring it in.
