I think that I mentioned before that I'm a big fan of the ALIX boards.

The 6B2 board:

# 2 Ethernet, 1 mini PCI slot, 1 miniPCI Express slot, 1 serial port
# CPU: 500 MHz AMD Geode LX800 CPU
# DRAM: 256MB DDR DRAM
# Storage: CompactFlash socket

The Netgate guys will send you the case, board, power adapter, etc. in a
kit, and you can choose whether you want USB, serial, (1|2|3) Ethernet
ports, etc.

This one's $180.

Though I can also see the value of the retire laptop "California server"
with built-in UPS. :-)
