Good question, Ubuntu 9.04 re-wrote grub i the mbr so the menu.lstentries
would be in 9.04, which doesn't boot. I would probably try to boot 9.04
from th grub command line by editing the 9.04 entry, I thought Ubuntu
disks had a rescue mode ?

Just in case My original sugggestion is mis-guided :-)
'grub-install' affects the mbr, 'grub-update' writes the menu.lst on the
installed os
