The biggest "thing" with the alternate, that I can tell, is that it
offers a minimal memory required install as well as installing xfce as
the window manager.

This allows those under powered computers to work more like a nicely
powered one.

XFCE is a reasonable option.

As David said...using synaptic or apt-get, any time of installation
can be had.
