Sorry -- I should have let you guys know... problem solved! I joined
the Debian users list, and they helped me work through this.

It was actually the stupidest thing, and had nothing to do with Debian.
The reason Udevd was not producing the needed /dev/sde block file was
that Udevd was not running! While is was configuring/installing
programs, I must have accidentally killed it. I started Udevd, and I
was able to mount all my usb sticks, including the U3 Cruzer Micro. I
have also successfully mounted an SD card and a few other devices.

Udevd was already in my RcS.d directory, so Udevd starts at boot, like
it is supposed to. So I can reboot and Udevd works just fine.

I think I'll just add a few entries to the fstab file, instead of using
usbmount or ivman, although I'm sure that they would work now.

BTW, I also hate that extra junk on those U3 drives. I only picked up
the drive because I was in a big hurry at the time and didn't think to
look closely at the info on the package. That U3 smart partition (or
image, I guess) always gets in the way, and I never use it. Back in the
day when I did need portable Windows applications, I used software from
portableapps.com -- and that worked great for me.

Actually, since I got a dynamic dns name for my home network, I almost
never need a usb stick anymore. I mainly need the mounting skills for
mounting my SD cards, gp2x, digital cameras, and that sort of thing.
