[aklug] How secure is SMB protocol?

I've had to think about SMB, and Samba, a lot lately. I was wondering,
how secure is SMB protocol? The question is meant to be a general one,
but some specific aspects in my mind are:
- in communicating passwords
- in communicating user data
- compared to NFS
- compared to SSH (That is probably not a good thing to compare to, I
suppose. It is just that I do practically everything with SSH/SFTP.)
I was hoping that your subsequent discussions on the subject would fill
in the gaps in my very limited knowledge.
