[aklug] Virtual Machine Spftware (aka $.10/hour engineering)(AKA a good machine rescued from the dark side)

W all know there are projects out there that are not worth the effort.
but we do them anyway.

I took my Majicjack USB telephone adapter to South America, and decided
it was a wonderful product. The main advantage over Skype, etc, is that
I could plug a normal phone into it, and it would ring when someone
called. Side benefit was if someone called and left a voice mail
message, it was emailed to me as a wav file. One has unlimited access to
US and Canada numbers for $usd 20/year. Down side? It runs only under Doze!

The dongle ran well on a 512 mb laptop, connected through a wireless to
a pretty bad DSL in Colombia, so I assumed that network access was not
the issue.

First attempt was to load VirtualBox on a spare machine, then install
Windows XP professional. Major failure, voice quality was really bad,
lots of drips, etc.I then tossed the towel, and installed on the iron.
The machine works great, but I have sacrificed a perfectly good machine
to the Dark Side.

To the rescue, my server, a 1.25 dual processor PIII machine with 2 gb
memory. (yes, not this years issue!). I installed VirtualBox, build a
Doze machine, and found the same. Then I messed about with VMware
player. but found that I was unable to install Doze on any of the
pre-build images that are advertised to allow it.

Finally downloaded the full VMware server. Spend a lot of time figuring
out how to run it, and finally loaded XP Pro, SP2 , then the MajicJack
software. Works like a charm, now I must run cables.

Next step is to figure out how to export the VM to my laptop, to run
under VM player.

Looks like these folks have a lead on access to USB, if nothing else.

Total cost? I don wanna know!
