AMD came out with the first 64 bit PC cpu's, intel quickly followed with
the EMT 64? or some such. Basically Intel followed AMD's instruction set.

The Linux kernel supports AMD & Intel since the instruction set is the
same.

Some of the issues with running 64 bit are none of the web browser pkugins
are 64 bit. OpnenOffice is very close to a release quality 64 bit
version.

Most 64 bit distro's run 32 bit libraries, to support the 32 bit app's.

Debian has made a choice to run pure 64 bit, Ubuntu et al run 32 bit apps
with 32 bit libraries.

I read up on both. I'm still confused. Is 64 bit Linux the same for both
processors?
Ubuntu has a 64 bit version for the AMD processor. Will this work on the
Intel chip? You might have to recompile the kernel but I'm hoping the 64
bit libraries will work.
I think I'll keep things simple and go AMD. That way I can use AMD 64
bit Ubuntu if I want.
