With my GF4 MX440 if I use anything but the Nvidia beta driver, I get an
illuminated black screen that never changes. Services are fine, but it
simply won't display graphics. I have to flip the switch or SSH in and
reboot it, changing the 'nvidia' to 'nv' in the xorg.conf file.
I've found that mileage always varies with 3d drivers and hardware.
Take the same card, move it from one machine to another with a different
motherboard, and it'll tank. Take a working system with a 3d card, and
throw in a SCSI controller, and it'll tank. You just have to find
something that works and then try to keep things static.

You should be able to specify the card in your xorg.conf file. Xorg
-configure will configure the display device with a PCI ID (1:5:0 for my
PCI Geforce FX 5200, 1:0:0 for my AGP cards). X will ignore the card
if you configure the one you want.

I think that any person that wants to do 3D in linux has to work. My
laptop has an ATI Radeon that gives me a lovely gray screen a lot of the
time when I use the fglrx driver.
