OK, a full disk would do it too.
 
I suggested the delete mtab option because I've seen mtab get locked
(twice!) by a crash.
 
The file becomes unwriteable, and survives a reboot - almost like the
immutable flag was set.
 
Deleting the file and letting it be recreated on the fly allows a
successful reboot.
 
You can play with this on a test machine by setting the immutable flag
and rebooting -- it's fun.

        thanks to cycom at IRC its fixed, i tried to image my disk,
failed, 'deleted' the failure, and not long after that i froze.
        the failed image tool up 40%!! of my disk, but now thats

                        If your home, usr, etc. are on their own
partitions, from the recovery
                        mode try deleting /etc/mtab and rebooting.
