Oh some do work. My Averatec (before the MB just up and died) worked
fine with the built in RA2500 wireless card it had. Aside from having
only one antenna (not the card's fault) it was great.

The Atheros PCI card that I referenced before doesn't work at all in
Linux. From my Googling, it seems that there are problems with madwifi
and certain VIA chipsets. The chipset in question is a VIA KM266. An
RT73 chipset USB wireless dongle I bought also just doesn't want to work
with any sort of encryption, even though the module loads, the device
comes up, and I can scan. Same with a Linksys WG311 (not a WG311T). I
can scan and see all my neighbors AP's, I just can't associate. My
NetGear 54g card works great with NetworkManager.

Support for newer chipsets in Linux just seems **fragile**. I've spent
a lot of time on the various forums trying to get a couple of cards to
work, and I see lots and lots of references to things working just fine
for one person, but the identical config won't work for another. Often
it comes down to slightly different hardware on the computer or you find
that the first person doesn't even have WEP turned on and his ssid is
probably set to "linksys" while the second person is trying to get some
sort of encryption working. Many cards that allegedly work with
ndis-wrapper are like this.

Anyhow. I ended up buying a Cisco AIR-352 PCI card on e-bay after
taking a look at an example here at work. The old 11b chipsets work
fine for what I need them to do, especially given that they are still
faster than my internet connection at home.
