Interesting question...

Personally I use Avast on my systems. http://www.avast.com
It doesn't only protect against the typical system type viruses, but it
also provides a good defense for Mail, PTP, IM, web type stuff also. One
of the features that I like is that upon initial installation it wants
to do a reboot and scan at the system level. (aka before anything is
loaded.) It's saved several of my friends computers, by doing this scan.
During this scan, it'll allow you to do the typical move to quarentine,
delete the file, or attempt cleaning. (Personally I almost always move
to quarentine.)

Another piece of software I usually install (but not virus related) is
Crap Cleaner.. http://www.ccleaner.com
It's a pretty small package ~1.25 Meg, but it does a wonderful job
crawling through the system emptying out various temp files. It also
does a very good job a cleaning out the windows registry.
