Debian testing can put patches out quite often, especially for a GUI machine. I find it easier to grab the updates in small bunches instead of doing an update every week or so.

The downloads are smaller (sometimes) and since fewer packages are installed at one time it is easier to track changes.

If I am reasonably sure that nothing serious has happened, I'll do an apt-get autoclean to delete obsoleted deb files. Otherwise I can downgrade again with the old packages.

(That doesn't work if I don't find the problem right away and autoclean too early.)
