'update' doesn't install any packages, dist-upgrade & upgrade do.
'dist-upgrade' will install new packages, while upgrade will only install
newer versions of existing packages., i.e. if a newer version of a
package comes with a new depends dist-upgrade will install it and the new
package, upgrade will 'hold back' the upgrade of the package that needs
the new package/depends installed.
