Re: Charter college Linux courses - Are they worth anything at all?

Thanks Damien

My question is due to what I am going through at the moment, we have
an employee that has never used Linux before which I am cramming
information into as my last week with this employer is almost up. My
manager assumed this would be a wise course of action versus
attempting to find a skilled individual to handle the realm for a
while.

He didn't know anything about the command line this morning. He is
speeding along and wants to study more about Linux and use it. Yes, I
have given him a 3.4ghz HT P4 to use as an Ubuntu workstation.

I am having manager issues right now. A week ago he asked me to train
our employee how to add email accounts to a postfix system with no
easy "add user" button. And now adding phones to a complicated voip
system. My first thought was "ok.. lets get him comfortable with the
command line" which was vetoed by my manager, "Just get him the info
he needs to make changes". Even though he can't make changes if he
can't type in the commands to make them.

So I am officially going nuts, and very happy I am moving off to a
better place to work where managers listen to people that they hired
to do something specific. I want the best for this employee burdened
with learning what he needs to edit files on our server and reload a
voip system. I pray he never has a typo, which will be in my exit
report with this company.

I am pretty miffed that this guy hasn't even attempted to find a
replacement and assumes my work can be done by a newly graduated MCSE
with no professional experience. :( I need a hug.
