I like to do it as a hobby and I really hate using other services that
control my e-mail, restrict my filtering, storage space, and attachment
sizes. Too often these issues get in the way so I find it to be very useful
running my own server.

Otherwise I like to run my own mailserver because it makes me aware of all
these problems. I learn best by actually "doing" it rather than just reading
about it because of reason like this. A standard walkthrough online usually
doesn't tell you that, "oh by the way, you may not be able to use a
mailserver at all because your ISP won't let you." Of course go figure that
now ISP's are controlling what their customers can do with their internet
connection.

In the past I used to run an e-mail server with sendmail and once I set it
up I never had to touch it. I didn't even have to install spam filters cause
only a few people used it. Never had any problems running a mailserver,
until now and it's only because of this stupid port blocking. There has to
be a way to make this work and I want to know how. You never knwo when
figuring something like this out could help you in the future.
