can absorb and recall, so good notes and references are essential.

In this age of information all you need are good research skills and some
level of familiarity with the style technical references use (I know a lot of
people who get cross-eyed looking at man pages, and understandably so. But
once you get comfortable with their style of presentation and organisation
they're indispensible). Master that and you can attempt anything you want,
regardless of whether or not you've done it before.

In the end, the UNIX world is about the written word. I'm not a liberal arts

So, don't get disillusioned or intimidated by what you think you don't know.
It's all a lot more simple than many of us think, and once you master a few
core fundamentals the rest will snowball *fast*.
