Hypermail does a conversion of a .mbox file containing many emails into linked
hypertext files with a .index to tie them all together.
It makes many small files, so have a separate directory for the process.
  hypermail -m < .mbox file> -d <directory to put it all>
hypermail is in at least debian unstable
Thanks too to Stanley for hints to get the file readable by KMAIL.
