I've got a pair of promise cards in use (both in FreeBSD machines at the
moment, but both have worked nicely in linux machines in the past).

The thing to remember is to avoid the built-in "raid" that these cards
provide; it's crap. (My cards don't actually have it; they just serve as IDE
controllers)

Use the software raid of your choice, not the on-card craptastic raid, and you
should be fine.
