From what I remember a few years ago problems along those lines were related
to MTU size issues. Small requests made it through without a problem, but try
to upload a 5M+ file and your connection would get dropped consistently. But
it's been a *long* time since I've experienced anything like that.

If you can, try dropping your host's MTU down to ~1400 and see if that changes
anything...
